Technical Jobs Are Not Just IT
There are many types of technical jobs. Information technology is what first comes to mind. In fact even in these trying economic times IT opportunities are increasing. President Barack Obama assigned a Chief Technology Officer to the cabinet as well as two tech executives served on his transition team. Technology is still the future.
Before you consider a careen in information technology you should know what your options are. The most popular IT jobs include Chief Technology Officers, Information Technology Managers, Lead Applications Developers, Software Engineers, Systems Administrators, Database Managers, Senior Web developers, Network Engineers, Project Manager/Senior Consultants, Systems Security Administrators, and Help Desk Managers.
You can find salary ranges beginning at thirty thousand dollars per year to fifty thousand a year and even higher. The salary you can demand will be determined on your skills, certifications and geographic location. If you are a high school grad you will only receive entry level pay until you attain more experience, education and certification.
Information technology positions have also faced being downsized in this economy. But when a company downsized its IT department many times they begin to outsource more of the work. This provides a great opportunity to provide consulting work to many more organizations.
But, Information Technology are not the only technical jobs that are in demand. Surveys indicate that many employers have problems finding specialized, skilled workers in many different areas. Graduates are qualified but employers looking to fill graduate jobs vacancies often find that the graduates applying simply don’t have enough real world experience. This is a shame as it means that graduate IT jobs and graduate language jobs are then offered to people who are deemed more appropriate.
Auto mechanics would be a good option if you are a problem solver and a car lover. This area of work provides for stable employment. To make the best money as an auto mechanic a certification or associate degree would be helpful.
HVAC mechanics is another technical repair work always in demand. This job requires that you enjoy working with your hands. You will have responsibility for maintaining and repairing climate control systems. These systems are found in homes, offices, hospitals, hotels and just about everywhere. The work outlook is stable for this field. Technical and on the job training is the general requirement.
Engineering has many fields of specialty for the technically inclined. You can design and manage construction of bridges, dams, buildings and roads. A bachelors degree is a must for a careen in engineering and the field is very stable.
Aircraft mechanics and avionics are other technical carriers in high demand. These workers keep the worlds aircraft flying. Responsibilities include inspections, repairs, and routine maintenance, A stable industry where your position cannot be outsourced to another country. A two or four year degree in aviation technology, avionics or aviation maintenance is preferred.
Electrical workers install power lines and make repairs to the power grid. These are the people that keep all of us connected via phone, internet and all our electronic devices running when we need them. There are opportunities to work for an institution or an office building in larger cities. Much of the training is learned on the job but a fundamental education in electronics and electricity is useful and takes only one or two years to finish. If you are beginning in this field an apprenticeship may be required, also, look into language jobs as the need for multi lingual employees is ever increasing.
